Alpha Phi Alpha: The First Black Greek Letter Organization

Founded on December 4, 1906 at Cornell University, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. holds the historic distinction of being the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American men. Born out of the need for brotherhood and academic support in a racially hostile environment, the “Seven Jewels” built more than an organization — they laid the foundation for a movement of excellence, leadership, and service.

Alpha men have long been at the forefront of progress, proudly representing in civil rights, education, politics, and the arts. Notable members include:

  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – Civil rights icon and Nobel Peace Prize recipient

  • Thurgood Marshall – The first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice

  • W.E.B. Du Bois – Scholar and co-founder of the NAACP

  • Paul Robeson, Dick Gregory, Roland Martin, and countless more

Whether on campus or in the community, Alpha Phi Alpha continues to uphold its motto:
